About the Organization

Early in 2000 a small group of angling guides began discussing the need to develop an organization for all Fraser Valley angling guides to provide a unified group to speak to both levels of government and to achieve a high level of guiding professionalism in a rapidly growing industry. The idea of the organization was founded by Marc Laynes, Fred Helmer, Frank Staiger and Steve Arcand. It was greatly assisted by two other individuals not involved in the guiding industry at all, namely Greg Latham and Jane McIvor. It was with the tremendous knowledge and assistance of these two key persons that put the Fraser Valley Angling Guides Association (FVAGA), a non-profit, registered society, onto paper. With the paperwork and a few ideas as our base, our inaugural meeting of the FVAGA was on June 19th, 2000.

Five objectives were formed as the basis for the need of the organization. These objectives were voted on and agreed to during the course of our progress.

The objectives of the Association are:

a) To provide a collectively singular and concise voice to the governments of both the Province and Canada, in regards to Angling Guides Policies and regulations, sport fishing opportunities and the promotion of the direct and indirect economic benefit of sport fishing and angling guide operations in the Province of British Columbia, specifically the Fraser Valley region.

b) To demonstrate to the Province industry initiative and reliance, and that as an association, demonstrate it's willingness to work cooperatively and maintain open communication with the provincial government.

c) To promote the professional angling guides in the Fraser Valley and to maintain a code of conduct and ethics, among all anglers and guides, that equals the quality and uniqueness of the Fraser Valley fishing experience.

d) To promote world class and unique fisheries that are within the Fraser Valley area.

e) To provide area angling guides an opportunity to resolve guide-related issues in an organized and industry sanctioned format in a professional manner.

The FVAGA has instituted it's own Code of Conduct and Ethics of which each member must adhere to in order to become, and remain, as a member. This is for the benefit of the public, our customers, and the resource itself.

In early 2004, our membership has grown to nearly 40 members, and is expected to increase 10% or more by the beginning of the season, a huge jump from our early and humble beginnings.

We encourage visitors to contact guides who are members of the FVAGA to get the most out of their fishing holiday. Your guarantee of success is based on the fact that each member of the FVAGA works hard to ensure you enjoy the best fishing trip possible. This is accomplished in part by agreeing to follow codes of conduct based on ethical sport fishing practices and by maintaining the highest level of professionalism possible.

Good luck and all the best in your fishing adventures in the Fraser Valley.
